چکیده

We measured the ensemble-averaged spectral correlation functions and statistical distributions of spectral spacing and intensity for lasing modes in weakly scattering systems, and compared them to those of the amplified spontaneous-emission spikes. Their dramatic differences illustrate distinct physical mechanisms. Our numerical simulation revealed that even without reabsorption the number of potential lasing modes might be greatly reduced by local excitation of a weakly scattering system. The lasing modes can be drastically different from the quasimodes of the passive system, due to selective amplification of the feedback from the scatterers within the local gain region.

Statistics of random lasing modes in weakly scattering systems.

We investigated the statistics of random lasing modes in colloidal solutions with local pumping. The ensemble-averaged spectral correlation function of single-shot emission spectra exhibits regular oscillations. The statistical distribution of laser emission intensity follows a power-law decay, in comparison with an exponential decay of the statistical distribution of amplified spontaneous emis...

Numerical study of amplified spontaneous emission and lasing in random media

We simulate the transition from amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) to lasing in random systems with varying degrees of mode overlap. This is accomplished by solving the stochastic Maxwell-Bloch equations with the finite-difference time-domain method. Below lasing threshold, the continuous emission spectra are narrowed by frequency-dependent amplification. Our simulations reproduce the stochas...

Transition from amplified spontaneous emission to laser action in strongly scattering media

In an active random medium, the combination of multiple scattering with light amplification may lead to random laser action. However, it is crucial but sometimes difficult to distinguish between amplified spontaneous emission and lasing. By varying the amount of scattering in an amplifying random medium, we have observed the transition from amplified spontaneous emission to lasing with coherent...

Spectral behavior of partially pumped weakly scattering random lasers.

Stochastic noise is incorporated in the numerical simulation of weakly scattering random lasers, which qualitatively captures lasing phenomena that have been observed experimentally. We examine the behavior of the emission spectrum while pumping only part of the entire one-dimensional random system. A decrease in the density of lasing states is the dominant mechanism for observing discrete lasi...

Inherent stochastic linearization of random laser modes

Weakly scattering random lasers exhibit lasing modes that spatially overlap and can interact strongly via gain saturation. Consequently, lasing in highthreshold modes may be suppressed by strong low-threshold lasing modes. We numerically examine the effect of inherent spontaneous emission noise on this strong nonlinear phenomenon. With a method to incorporate this noise into the Maxwell–Bloch e...
